Why should you clean the washer filter?

Your washer filter collects dirt, lint, and small objects like coins or buttons.

If the filter becomes blocked, water may not drain properly and the machine may not function as it should. In the worst-case scenario, it can cause faults or damage to the pump.

Cleaning it regularly helps extend the lifespan of your machine and ensures your clothes come out clean.

Still, it’s a household appliance and things can go wrong. Want to avoid worrying about repairs or replacements? Then a washer subscription might be for you. When you rent a machine from us, we handle installation, repairs, and replacements.

Signs your filter may be blocked:

  • Clothes are still wet after spinning.

  • The machine isn’t draining properly.

  • A musty smell.

  • An error code appears on the display (varies per model).

Not sure? Then it's probably time to clean the filter.

How to clean your washer filter

Cleaning the filter is simple and only takes a few minutes. Follow these steps to prevent blockages and keep your washer running smoothly.

Where is the washer filter located?

In most models, the filter is at the front, near the bottom, behind a small door or panel. You might need to press the panel or use a coin or screwdriver to open it.

In some machines, the filter is located at the back or inside, depending on the type.

Check your user manual if you're unsure.

1. Preparing to clean the filter

You’ll need:

  • A towel or cloth

  • A shallow bowl or tray (to catch water)

  • Possibly a sponge or cloth

Steps:

  1. Switch off the machine and unplug it.

  2. Locate the filter, usually at the front bottom, behind a small flap.

2. Cleaning the washer filter

Steps:

  1. Place a towel or tray under the flap. Water may spill when you open it.

  2. Open the flap. Slowly unscrew the filter and let the water drain into the tray.

  3. Remove dirt and objects. Check thoroughly and take out any lint, coins, or other items.

  4. Rinse the filter under the tap. Use an old toothbrush for stubborn dirt.

  5. Check the filter housing. Wipe it clean with a cloth.

  6. Screw the filter back in securely and close the flap.

Maintenance tips

Check the drain hose and pump regularly for blockages too. For example, schedule a quick check every three months to keep your machine in top condition.

How often should you clean the washer filter?

That depends on how often you do laundry and whether you check your pockets for coins or loose items. On average, it’s a good idea to check the filter once a month.

Do you wash frequently, use low temperatures, or skip checking pockets? Then clean the filter more often.
