Cleaning the washer

A fresh wash starts with a clean washer. But how do you keep your machine clean? In this blog, you’ll learn why regular cleaning is necessary, how often to do it, and how to clean each part of your machine. We’ll also share practical tips to keep maintenance easy, quick, and eco-friendly.

Why clean your washer?

Your washer cleans your clothes, but it goes through a lot itself. Residues from detergent, mould and grease build-up, limescale, and forgotten items in pockets can accumulate. This can lead to unpleasant odours, a dirty drum, or even a broken machine. Regular cleaning prevents these issues, keeps your laundry smelling fresh, comes out truly clean, and helps clothes stay nice for longer.

How often should you clean the washer?

That depends on how often and how you use the machine. The more you wash, the more often you need to clean.

The “how” mostly comes down to checking your pockets: remove coins, hair ties, tissues, and other small items before washing. If you don’t, these can damage the drum or block the filter.

General maintenance after every wash:

  • Check the drum and seal for dirt, hair, or small items left behind.

  • Check the door for soap residue or foam, and wipe it clean with a cloth.

For average use (3 to 5 washes per week), here are good maintenance guidelines:

  • Check and clean the seal: once a month.

  • Clean the filter: once a month.

  • Run a hot wash to remove biofilm: every 2 weeks.

  • Remove limescale: every 3 months.

How to clean the washer

Cleaning your washer isn’t difficult. A good basic routine is to occasionally run a hot wash at 90°C or 95°C. This helps flush out soap residues, dirt, and biofilm from the drum and pipes.

Below, you’ll find which products to use and how to clean each part properly. That way, your laundry stays fresh, and your washer stays in top condition.

What to use to clean the washer

Always use mild cleaning agents like warm water and white vinegar. Harsh cleaners can damage components. To remove limescale, use a special descaler or a dishwasher tablet.

Good cleaning products for washers include:

  • White vinegar or natural vinegar

  • Washing soda (not baking soda!)

  • Dishwasher tablets

  • Soft cloths

Cleaning the washer seal

Clean the seal once a month using a clean cloth and warm water. Wipe thoroughly between the folds. Avoid harsh chemicals, as they can damage the rubber.

Cleaning the washer filter

Check and clean the filter once a month. If you don’t usually check pockets before washing, clean the filter more often—after every wash or once a week. The filter is usually located at the bottom front of the machine. Place a dry towel underneath to catch any water. Unscrew the filter, remove any debris, and rinse it clean. Don’t use harsh chemicals. Dry it and screw it back in.

Removing mould and grease build-up (biofilm)

Run an empty hot wash every two weeks at 90°C–95°C with washing soda or a special washer cleaner. Repeat after a few days if odours or residue remain.

Removing limescale

Use a dishwasher tablet or a dedicated descaler every 3 months to remove limescale.

Make washer maintenance easier

Not keen on frequent cleaning? Fair enough. These habits help prevent issues and make maintenance quicker:

  • Use less detergent than recommended – helps prevent build-up.

  • Avoid using fabric softener (or use very little) – also helps reduce build-up.

  • Leave the door and detergent drawer open after washing – prevents mould and smells.

  • Clean the detergent drawer regularly.

  • Check pockets for small items – prevents drum damage.

  • Use laundry bags for bras or garments with loose parts – prevents drum damage.

Eco-friendly washing tips

  • Use a large laundry bag to catch microplastics. It also helps clothes last longer.

  • Choose detergent with natural ingredients and no microplastics.

  • Consider renting an energy-efficient and/or refurbished washer.
