How to clean the freezer in 6 steps

What’s the best way to clean your freezer? It may sound like a hassle, but with the following step-by-step guide, your freezer will be fresh, ice-free, and ready for restocking in no time.

1. Empty and switch off the freezer

Remove all items from the freezer. Store them temporarily in a cool box or another freezer if you have one. Then switch off the appliance and unplug it.

2. Defrost the freezer (if needed)

One of the first steps is to defrost your freezer, especially if there’s a thick layer of ice. Find out how to do this in our blog How to defrost the freezer.

Can you clean a freezer without defrosting it?

Yes, you can clean your freezer without defrosting if there’s little to no ice build-up. Or if you have a No Frost freezer, which generally doesn’t accumulate ice.

The steps below are also suitable for this type of freezer or when there's no ice build-up.

3. Clean the inside of the freezer

Use a solution of lukewarm water and a little washing-up liquid. Alternatively, you can use a Bosch cleaning product designed specifically for freezers — free of microplastics.

Wipe down the interior walls, drawers, and rubber door seals with a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid sharp objects or abrasive cleaners as these can damage the freezer.

4. Dry thoroughly

Use a clean, dry cloth to completely dry the inside. Moisture leads to rapid ice build-up and mould, so don’t skip this step — it won’t just dry on its own.

5. Clean the freezer condenser

The condenser is usually located at the back of the freezer and is responsible for releasing heat. Dust and dirt can reduce its efficiency. Clean it gently with a soft brush or vacuum with a soft-bristle attachment. Do this carefully and at least once a year.

6. Switch the freezer back on and refill

Close the door and plug the freezer back in. Wait until the temperature has dropped to -18 °C before putting the food back in.

FAQs about cleaning the freezer

How often should you clean the freezer?

Ideally, give your freezer a thorough clean every 3 to 6 months. If it smells or looks dirty, clean it sooner. Check and clean the condenser once or twice a year.

Is cleaning a No Frost freezer any different?

No, you follow the same steps as with a standard freezer. The only difference is that you usually don’t need to defrost it.

Can you clean the freezer with soda?

Yes, it’s completely safe. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a litre of warm water to neutralise odours and clean hygienically without harsh chemicals.

How do you get rid of bad smells in the freezer?

Give the freezer a thorough clean. Don’t forget the rubber seals and drainage holes. Use a solution with baking soda or cleaning vinegar. Leave a small bowl of lemon or baking soda inside the freezer to absorb lingering odours.
